A RANT ON PURPOSE

If you really think about it, the world is a really messed up place in a lot of ways. In terms of systems, ideas, products, etc. It’s really messed up.

Maybe this is just me, but why is it that we live in a world where Ed Sheeran is more popular than the Strokes, or Kanye West, or Blood Orange? Not to shit on Ed Sheeran, because he is a very capable songwriter and artist, but the three acts I mentioned literally shape the culture and push things forward with their work.

I don’t believe in selling out. I don’t believe in creating things that cater to the common public perception or opinion. People don’t know what they want until they see it. Is it arrogant for me to think this way? Maybe. But it doesn’t mean that I’m wrong. It just means that I’m hard-headed enough to think that we can change the world, that we can make a difference - that Ed Sheeran isn’t popular because some music producer told him this is what will sell, but that he’s popular because the art he creates is what he believes in.

I just want to change the world, man. I don’t want to franchise shit. I don’t want to take international people’s work and sell it for a quick buck. I want Philippine ingenuity to be alive and well and be both artistically relevant and commercially successful. I’ve always believed that while taste is subjective, quality is not. Great things are great things because they are. Shit things are shit because they are. What people like is the subjectivity, but the objectivity is in the distinction between the two.

That is my purpose in life. To change the world. To dent it. To try to make our messed up world just a bit better by making really awesome things and sharing them with as many people as possible. I’ll give everything I have in furthering this mission. I can’t solve world hunger, or poverty, or politics (yet, at least!) - but I can make things that change the way people view the world or themselves, in some small or big way.

It’s a big dream, but dreams are free.
